This holiday season we would like to say how truly grateful we are for our wonderful customers, partners, vendors and team members who support us. As we’re nearing the end of another great year, IT Resource is celebrating a special milestone. November marks our anniversary of 15 years in business and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Since November, 2000, we’ve been providing IT consulting, project-based and long-term engineering services, on-site, remote and 24x7 help-desk and support services to a growing number of industries and verticals. Being your trusted advisor for 15 years is quite a big accomplishment and we’re excited for many more years of business ahead of us.

Our Thanksgiving Food Drive

Tis the season for giving and as a team, we feel it is our responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than us. This year we will be collecting non-perishable items to deliver to our local food pantry for the Thanksgiving holiday. We'll have a box in our front lobby and if you would like to contribute, feel free to drop by and add your items to the collection. We feel that together, we can make someone's holiday season a little brighter!

Team 'Run IT Faster' Did It!

Our very own relay team “Run IT Faster” finished the Grand Rapids Marathon last month for the second year in a row. This year’s team included Leo, Carrie, Carolyn, Andrew and Richard. This was Carolyn and Richard’s first time ever running a race and they were both surprised by how well they did and how much fun they had. It proves that with a willingness to try, motivation, and peer support, anything can be accomplished.

Let’s Get Moving Together!
Our next big race will be the River Bank Run on May 14, 2016. This is an all ages, co-ed race with four events, a 5K Walk, 5K Run, 10K Run and 25K (15.5 miles) Run. The 25K has a relay team option for teams of 2-3 participants. We would love to field multiple teams and have our customers run with us. If you’re interested in the River Bank Run or other upcoming races let us know! You don’t have to be experienced and there’s lots of resources available for training. A quality training tool that we can attest to is the Gazelle Run Camps, they have a variety of different levels for beginners (couch to 5K) and experienced runners (25K training programs).

We also have to give credit to Northern Physical Therapy who put together our corporate wellness program last year. The program really kicked off healthy habits around our office and we’ve all been making positive lifestyle changes since then. Shortly after our wellness program ended, our first marathon relay team was fielded and a tradition began.

Finally, we'd like the thank our team of "supporters" who came out to cheer our team on at the Grand Rapids Marathon.

Mlive recently published an article in response to the #ILookLikeAnEngineer viral hashtag and added their own twist by including “GR” at the end. The #ILookLikeAnEngineerGR inspired female tech workers in Grand Rapids and surrounding areas to get involved and share photos of themselves. We think it’s great to see so many dedicated women participate and share photos. We sent 4 photos to Mlive that they included in their article.

The ITR women in the article are Carrie Borchers, Molly Reid, Susan Ratzsch and Lori Brandt. These ladies have been in the technology industry for many years and they all take pride in what they do. We’re all part of the same unique community and it’s inspiring to see women from all different tech companies, come together to represent the Grand Rapids tech industry as a whole.

The article did a great job highlighting a wide variety of jobs, all in the technology field. The hashtag and recent positive media can be a game changer for some women and girls thinking about going to school for an IT or technology degree. It shows that contrary to the beliefs of some, lots of women are successful in the IT world and there’s possibility for anyone.

A Disaster Close to Home

A few weeks ago in Coopersville, a construction worker in a backhoe hit a low power line which wrapped around another line above it causing a power outage to several grids in the surrounding area. Thankfully, there were no injuries from this accident but it did cause major backfeeding throughout most of Randall Street, including IT Resource.

The backfeed eventually led to the overheating of two transformers next to our building. One transformer was so hot we couldn’t even get near it and the other began smoking. Quickly after this realization, we called the Coopersville Fire Department and then Consumers Energy. Once everyone arrived, the power was cut to IT Resource and the surrounding buildings. The transformers were able to cool down, and were eventually replaced.

Many surrounding businesses including gas stations, restaurants, shops, and medical offices had no choice but to shut down during this time. Fortunately for IT Resource, our systems and data center remained unaffected. Because of our built in power redundancy, the office and data center continued to operate flawlessly with uninterrupted internet connections in and out of the data center.

This proves that disaster can strike anyone at any time. If the right tools and business continuity solutions are implemented, downtime can be reduced or eliminated. It was a hectic day at the office but at least we had piece of mind knowing that our systems and data center will continue to operate.

Our Interview with Buy Local Michigan

When it comes to helping local businesses flourish, Duane Weed and Buy Local Michigan are making things happen. Their mission is to share Michigan’s story and to promote our businesses, communities and people. Because we believe in Buy Local Michigan's philosophies on supporting all things local, we jumped at the chance to stop by and share our story with them.

In the interview, Gary explained that our philosophy involves getting to know businesses and helping them grow. Really getting to understand the needs of our customers and providing the best solution far exceeds the ability to simply sell products. In addition, he explains that one of the most important aspects of business and technology is data backup because the necessity to house and share data online is growing. With that comes an increased need for proper backup and storage. You must know and understand where your data is, whether it is secure, and whether it is protected and backed up properly.

Cars, Guitars, and Technology

The Del Shannon Car Show streamlined the registration process this year by utilizing wireless internet capabilities and offering hot spots where participants could use iPads to quickly and effortlessly register their cars, even on the day of the event.
Del Shannon Car Show volunteer, Dennis Raap, Jr. uses the IT Resource wireless setup to register cars on the day of the show. 

To assist the nearly 800 drivers who show up for Michigan’s longest linear car show, we donated services and equipment including wireless internet capabilities, 4G wireless from Verizon to create hot spots, Cisco Meraki wireless cloud networking equipment, and the Apple iPad hub to enable secure connections.

We’ve been long-time sponsors of the Del Shannon Car Show because we love supporting our local community. While we serve customers throughout the Midwest, our business is based in Coopersville.
